The German government is scrutinizing the funding framework for hydrogen as ramp-up failed to meet expectations. Rather than feed-in tariffs, the economics ministry wants to focus on hydrogen imports to lower production costs. Under a feed-in tariff system, producers get a guaranteed price for the green hydrogen they supply – similar to renewables support through […]

The German energy regulator BNetzA has set out rules to incentivise grid investments and lower system costs. Billions of euros are needed to digitalise and upgrade grid capacity, with BNetzA aiming to prevent operators from earning excessive profits by passing on unnecessarily high costs to customers. “We keep an eye on the interests of households, […]

Coordinated, cross-border planning of Europe’s future power and gas infrastructure could avoid the need for 505 GW of gas-fuelled backup power capacity, lower onshore wind requirements by 15%, and reduce hydrogen electrolyser needs by 9%. Overall, these efficiencies could save Europe up to €750 billion. A top-down, integrated planning is essential to unlocking these gains, […]

Britain’s energy regulator Ofgem has outlined a reform package aimed at accelerating grid connection system, warning network operators they face financial penalties if they fail to meet new performance targets. The German government wants to communicate the tender criteria for new gas-fired power plants before Christmas, economy minister Katherina Reiche promised at an industry conference in Berlin. Concrete tenders could be issued as early as March 2026. In total, the government wants to tender up to 10 GW of dispatchable gas-fired power plant capacity next […]

BDI, the Federation of German Industries, has sharply criticised EU guardrails on Berlin’s proposed ‘industrial electricity price.’ From January 1, 2026, eligible companies would pay no more than 5 €cents per kWh – substantially below current wholesale electricity prices. This subsidy would be capped at 50% of each company’s annual electricity consumption, throwing a life-line […]

An air permit, issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, clears the way for the 4.4 GW gas-fuelled Homer City Generation. With this approval in hand, developers complete site readiness and start construction, with first electricity targeted by 2027. “Receiving air quality plan approval is a major milestone for our team, our partners, and […]

The German government has agreed to reduce network charges and electricity taxes, while upholding renewable expansion targets. A new ‘industrial electricity’ price – along with a short-term tender for 12 GW of dispatchable capacity – is meant to revive Germany’s industrial core. Industry observers hailed the 12 GW tender as a first step towards a […]
