Toshiba JSW Turbine and Generator Pvt., a Toshiba Group company based in Chennai, India, has won a contract worth US$470 million to supply of three 800 MW supercritical steam turbine and generator island packages to NTPC, India's largest state-owned energy service provider. Delivery of the equipment will start in 2013, Toshiba JSW said today.
The German power market is undergoing a transition in generation capacity on the supply side, while demand growth remains subdued, the French investment bank Societe Generale said. "2013 will be a key year for new build, but retirement decisions will be a key strategic variable as early as this year," the bank said in a special report.
Indonesia's state electricity company PLN has halted operations at six gas-fired power plants as it is struggling to obtain sufficient gas supplies from the Tangguh Field. "Some of PLN's power plants have not received gas supply [at all]," PLN chief executive Nur Pamudji told local reporters today.

Siemens has received the German Industry's Innovation Award for developing the H-Class gas turbine (SGT5-8000) with a world record efficiency of 60.75 percent. Including the test phase, development of the SGT5-8000H gas turbine "lasted a good 10 years", with investments costs at approximately one half billion euros, the Erlangen-based turbine manufacturer said.
Inter RAO UES, a Russian state-run power generator and exporter, and the Germany utility RWE are holding talks over establishing a joint venture power plant company. The JV would oversee the operation of existing and new coal- and gas-fired power stations in Germany, the Benelux countries and the UK.
Statkraft today said it will not replace a gas-fired power plant in Emden, north-west Germany. "By mothballing the plant and reducing the staff, combined with the completion of Knapsack II, Statkraft will achieve a more competitive gas power portfolio in Germany," Statkraft CEO, Christian Rynning-Tønnesen, said.

General Electric (GE) has secured a contract to supply equipment and services for a new 900 MW gas-fired power plant in southern Turkey. GE said it will supply the plant with two Frame 9FB Gas Turbines and three generators and has also has signed a 12-year service agreement.
