Producing electricity from gas, coal or wind sees substantial amounts of input energy lost during the generating process. In 2019, U.S. utility-scale power plants consumed 38 quadrillion British thermal units (quads) of energy to provide 14 quads of electricity, with over 60% input energy lost.
