The rise of network-enabled consumer devices that are constantly connected to the internet results in energy wastage of an estimated 400 TWh of electricity per year, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). A recent report suggest that devices such as set-top boxes, modems, printers and game consoles create unnecessary demand on the grid and cost $80 billion each year in wasted energy.
