The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts that natural gas-fired power generation will be the dominant new source of power until 2040, with barely any new coal plants added after 2015. The EIA’s anticipated that between 2013 and 2040 new gas plants will add 255 GW while coal will add 3 GW in total.
