French engineering giant Alstom is nearing a pact with the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) to pay over $700 million to settle a foreign-bribery probe. In June, General Electric won a bid to acquire Alstom's power segment for $17 billion, but the DoJ stressed the penalty will be paid by Alstom, not GE.
