Situated onshore in the Yamal Peninsula and partly in the Kara Sea, the field holds reserves of 2 trillion cubic meters (Tcm). Tapping the Cenomanian-Aptian deposits will be a priority, Miller said, with production start slated in 2023 at a design capacity […]

Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) is taking steps to reduce its complete dependence on natural gas for power generation. By 2024, natural gas is meant to provide four fifths of the country’s electricity needs while the remainder will come from renewables and Oman’s first coal-fired independent power project (IPP).

The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has given the green light for the proposed merger of Dominion Energy and SCANA Corp. The regulator ruled the combination of the two companies was “consistent with the public interest.” Dominion is now pushing to complete the transaction before the end of this year.

China’s shift to cleaner-burning fuels in the power sector has increased the country’s gas demand and turned it into one of the world’s largest importer of American shale gas. US LNG exports in 2017 averaged 1.9 billion cubic feet per day and of that amount, 15% went to China, making it the third-largest importer of […]

Gas-fired power plants will supply 37% of U.S. electricity generation during the summer month of June, July, and August, while the contribution of coal power will drop slightly to 30% in summer 2018, according to the EIA’s July 2018 Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO). The fuel switch is driven by low-cost supply with delivered cost of […]

Importing LNG for power generation helps Pakistan not only to avert energy shortages – it also saves up to $3 billion in fuel costs. Running on regasified LNG, power stations with 62% efficiency can generate electricity at an average of Rs7-8 per unit which is about half of the cost of generating electricity based on […]

High-voltage direct current (HVDC) lines play a vital role in integrating renewable energy into the electric grid. Considering their cost effectiveness and lower electricity losses, HVDC lines could – if properly configured – help mitigate some operational issues associated with renewable generation.

Peak power demand in ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, can barely be met with installed capacity as reserve margins are less than 11%. This is not enough to meet peak summer demand, the North American Electric Reliability Corp (NERC) finds, considering that reserve margins in PJM Interconnection (PJM) are substantially higher at about […]

Natural gas, coal and petroleum account for at least 80% of energy consumption in the United States, even though the share of fossil fuels has fallen to the lowest level since 1902. Fossil fuel consumption in the U.S. dropped for the third consecutive year, according to EIA data, driven by slight decreases in coal and […]

July has started with early and intense heat in the United States, which coincides with a new high in natural gas production. However, consumption from the power sector is soaking up any additional supply, as cooling demand skyrockets and a slate of new combined-cycle generators (CCGTs) have begun operation. Cash prices at Henry Hub are […]

TTF gas prices rise after Trump rejects Hormuz deal

Sept 28 – European gas prices at the Dutch TTF rose nearly 2.5% on Monday after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that disruptions to Middle East LNG shipments could persist into the winter. The bullishness at Europe’s benchmark gas trading hub is exacerbated by fear of gas shortages, given that gas storages are just under 70% full in key gas consuming markets such as Germany. The Dutch TTF front-month Oct26 contract was last seen trading at €74.05 per Megawatt-hour, while the Brent contract for November delivery was last seen changing hands at $108.08 per barrel.

Singapore’s energy security hinges on LNG

Sept 14 – Singapore’s experience in the Middle East crisis highlights the country’s exposure to external energy supply shocks. Over 95% of Singapore’s electricity generation is fuelled by imported LNG, hence diversification is paramount for supply security, said Gan Siow Huang, Singapore’s minister of trade and industry. Singapore is hence developing a second LNG terminal with a view to increasing import capacity to 15 mtpa by 2030.
