As Germany seemingly turns into an incubator for renewables and energy storage, the countries traditional utilities E.ON and RWE have woken up to a different reality which forces them to dramatically change their business models. A regretful Johannes Teyssen, E.ON chief executive talks about “phantom pains” after the Uniper spin-off.

An oversupply in global gas markets is here to stay until the end of the decade, as the LNG glut is unlikely to be soaked up by utility buyers. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol explained that cheaper coal and continued strong renewables growth were blocking gas from expanding more rapidly in the power sector.

Ben van Beurden, Shell CEO, has realised his firm may have got it wrong on wind energy as the oil major turns to selected renewables. This U-turn comes amid uncertainty as to whether oil prices will rebound significantly beyond $50 per barrel. “I would say our return into wind is a bit of a U-turn, and if […]

TTF gas prices rise after Trump rejects Hormuz deal

Sept 28 – European gas prices at the Dutch TTF rose nearly 2.5% on Monday after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that disruptions to Middle East LNG shipments could persist into the winter. The bullishness at Europe’s benchmark gas trading hub is exacerbated by fear of gas shortages, given that gas storages are just under 70% full in key gas consuming markets such as Germany. The Dutch TTF front-month Oct26 contract was last seen trading at €74.05 per Megawatt-hour, while the Brent contract for November delivery was last seen changing hands at $108.08 per barrel.
