Softer than expected storage withdrawals have conjured up more bearish sentiment to drive the Henry Hub spot gas price back under the $2/MMBtu threshold. With not that many weeks left in the withdrawal season, analysts at Societe Generale expect that “the exit [in March] will inevitably be very strong,” although at a level lower than […]

Anticipated savings from a new CCGT and lower gas prices have made Florida Power & Light (FPL) seek to reduce power rates starting from April. The decrease would cut $1.64 off a typical residential customer’s bill and, if approved, would coincide with the start-up of the 1,250 MW Port Everglades Next Generation Clean Energy Center.

The economics of coal-to-gas switching in power generation not only depend on carbon prices but also on the significant differences in efficiency levels of coal-fired power stations throughout Europe. Pointing at high-efficiency coal plants in Germany, WoodMackenzie finds that “to get any meaningful switching in this country, you need gas prices below $3/mmBtu.” In the UK, […]

Gas-burn in the US power sector was up 17% this winter and capacity utilisation of gas-fired plants keeps rising. Utilities reap greater profit margins for CCGT dispatch as operational costs decreased, with Henry Hub spot gas prices now just a notch above December’s record low of $1.93/MMBtu.

Rising needs for electricity and drinking water in Oman is forecast to spur a sharp rise in demand for natural gas over the next five years, according to Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP). In 2015, gas-burn by power and desalination plants in the sultanate was up 4.1% and reached 8,324 million cubic metres.

Gas is increasingly taking market share from coal in power generation as coal forward prices have been “bid down much more aggressively” along the curve. 2017 coal was trading at 39 $/t earlier this months, and 2018 coal was at 38 $/t, but analysts at Energy Aspects are wary that such prices might not be […]

Rolls-Royce Power Systems plants to replicate is recently commissioned gas power station in Mozambique in other African countries, as it seek to expand its presence across the continent. Rising power demand in southern Africa and low electrification levels make it a prime market for small-scale gas engine- or turbine-driven power solutions.

U.S. crude oil prices have been pushed below $30/bbl, largely due to high inventory levels of crude oil, uncertainty about global economic growth, volatility in equity and non-energy commodity markets, and the potential for additional crude oil supply to enter the market. Crude oil and petroleum product inventories have been growing since mid-2014 and are […]

Utility-scale renewable power plants across the US are seen to step up their supply of electricity to the grid by 9% in the course of this year. EIA analysts expect much of the growth to come from new wind and solar power installations as well as from rising hydro power contribution a relatively dry 2015.

TTF gas prices rise after Trump rejects Hormuz deal

Sept 28 – European gas prices at the Dutch TTF rose nearly 2.5% on Monday after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that disruptions to Middle East LNG shipments could persist into the winter. The bullishness at Europe’s benchmark gas trading hub is exacerbated by fear of gas shortages, given that gas storages are just under 70% full in key gas consuming markets such as Germany. The Dutch TTF front-month Oct26 contract was last seen trading at €74.05 per Megawatt-hour, while the Brent contract for November delivery was last seen changing hands at $108.08 per barrel.
