Cost is one of the most difficult factors to compare when deciding on fuel and technology for new-builds, but the as technologies can have vastly different capital, fuel, maintenance, and financing costs, as well as different utilization rates and access to fuel resources, the EIA said in a comparing analysis.

Despite a dramatic fall in oil prices, global gas demand is weakening due to an economic slowdown in Asia and renewable energy growth in Europe. The International Energy Agency forecasts gas demand to re-accelerate to grow 2% on average by 2020, but gains will be below earlier expectations.

Putting a price on CO2 emissions would capture the synergies of lower cost and lower carbon. “Statoil is already pursuing a shadow price of $50-60/ton of carbon emission, meaning we would not go for projects that cannot withstand such a carbon price,” Statoil CEO Eldar Sætre said at the WGC2015 in Paris. The ETS price […]

Countering the narrative of ‘clean coal’, Eni’s vice president for regulatory affairs Michele Pizzolato has highlighted the “much greener credentials of natural gas”, with CCGTs emitting less than half of coal-fired and less than a third of lignite-fired plants. High efficiency and flexibility makes gas “the ideal partner for renewables”, he said but stressed that […]

TTF gas prices rise after Trump rejects Hormuz deal

Sept 28 – European gas prices at the Dutch TTF rose nearly 2.5% on Monday after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that disruptions to Middle East LNG shipments could persist into the winter. The bullishness at Europe’s benchmark gas trading hub is exacerbated by fear of gas shortages, given that gas storages are just under 70% full in key gas consuming markets such as Germany. The Dutch TTF front-month Oct26 contract was last seen trading at €74.05 per Megawatt-hour, while the Brent contract for November delivery was last seen changing hands at $108.08 per barrel.
