Power generation in Luzon, the most populous island in the Philippines, is dependent on domestic gas supply from the Malampaya field which will be shut down for maintenance from March 15 to April 14. Subsequent shortages in gas supply are feared to cause rolling blackouts unless some generators switch to more costly fuel oil.

Power markets in Europa are expected to “test the ‘soft floor’ provided from the coal to gas switching potential in the UK.” At current coal, gas and carbon prices, the UK carbon floor prices opens up potential for fuel switching around $7/mmbtu which will sustain prices well into the summer, according to Wood Mackenzie.

Flexibility of LNG makes it “ideally suited” as a source of primary power generation in emerging markets, particularly for decentralised power projects that are far from other major gas supply routes, Jérôme Ferrier president of the International Gas Union (IGU) told Gas to Power Journal.

Performance and output of wind power installation across the U.S. vary significantly throughout the year due to highly seasonal wind patterns, leaving some grid operators struggle to to balance the fluctuating load. Flexible gas capacity is best placed to step in at short notice; and California’s ISO has even mandated 1.3-gigawatt of energy storage.
