Spark spreads, the profit margins for burning gas considering costs of carbon, are unlikely to increase at the expense of margins for coal-fired plants as the risk of an intensifying Ukraine crisis will lift gas prices, Société Générale analysts forecast.

Prompt prices at the Dutch TTF, the leading gas trading hub in Continental Europe, eased off late Wednesday amid ebbing concerns over reduced Russian gas deliveries following a blast on a Ukrainian transit pipeline and very healthy storage levels in much of the EU-28.

Despite a growth in peaking power capacity in the run-up to the 2014 World Cup, not all of Brazil’s gas-fired plants in continuous use as power producers adjust to changes in the gas supply balance. New domestic hydrocarbon production from the Santos, Campos, and Espririto Santos basin and rising LNG imports mitigate the risk of […]

Dirty king coal share in global primary energy consumption reached 30.1% last year, the highest level since 1970. Though coal consumption grew by 3%, well below the 10-year average of 3.9%, it still dwarfed the 1.4% growth of natural gas use, according to BP’s Statistical Review of World Energy 2014.

The data from these models is used to generate EIA’s Annual Energy Outlook report, the latest edition of which predicts that natural gas will become the largest source […]

Reliance on natural gas imports is set to increase throughout Europe with volumes projected to rise from 215 million tonnes (Mtoe) in 2014 to 320 Mtoe by 2030, according to energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie. Russian gas is forecast to “remain competitive” and “stay the cornerstone of European gas supply”, although European power producers seek ways […]

Weak demand for natural gas from power producers in Europe means that the market will not rebound to 2010 levels for at least 15 years if ever, according to a report from the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES). “While this sector will register some growth between 2015 and 2030 (+30 Bcm), nonetheless, gas for […]

Riots have broken out in the Indian northern city of Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh, after temperatures as high as 47.8°C caused blackouts following a grid overload and peak demand reached 5,400 MW, according to the power ministry. The government rushed to enact emergency measures to divert gas to power plants around Delhi, though this […]

Booming energy demand and more stringent regulation to improve air quality will see China replicate the ‘Golden Age’ of natural gas that is now firmly established in North America. A near-doubling of China’s gas demand by 2019 will compensate for a slight slowdown in growth in many other regions around the world, the International Energy […]

Pushing for industry to build more gas-fired power plants in Indonesia, the ministry of energy and mineral resources has drafted new legislation aiming to improve pricing policy and access to infrastructure as well as reducing bureaucratic hurdles for new projects.

TTF gas prices rise after Trump rejects Hormuz deal

Sept 28 – European gas prices at the Dutch TTF rose nearly 2.5% on Monday after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that disruptions to Middle East LNG shipments could persist into the winter. The bullishness at Europe’s benchmark gas trading hub is exacerbated by fear of gas shortages, given that gas storages are just under 70% full in key gas consuming markets such as Germany. The Dutch TTF front-month Oct26 contract was last seen trading at €74.05 per Megawatt-hour, while the Brent contract for November delivery was last seen changing hands at $108.08 per barrel.
