Though gas demand for power generation and industrial use is on the rise, global gas markets can only accommodate 6 to 7 Bcf per day of LNG exports from the United States in the next 5 years as U.S. gas’ price advantage dissipates when liquefaction and shipping costs are added, according to Bernstein Research.

Introducing more LNG-powered gas peaking plants to the Indian grid could help reduce power costs by improving overall efficiency, according to the Finnish manufacturer Wärtsilä. “Even when calculated on the basis of a high R-LNG price of $18/mmbtu, the average energy cost in the ‘optimized scenario’ is actually cheaper by Rs 0.14/ kWh than that […]

Texan grid operator Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has issued new forecasts for the state, indicating that new gas-fired power capacity will create record reserve margins. The organisation predicted that summer peak demand will be 68,100 MW – well within capacity limits of 74,600 MW.

With the unbundling of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) all but completed, analysts’ attention is now turning to the auctioning of 10 gas-fired power plants. In an upbeat outlook, Business Monitor forecasts a 9% growth of Nigeria’s power sector through to 2013.

Members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee have passed a bill that speeds up the approval process for U.S. LNG exports. Concerns that exporting the America’s shale gas bounty risks propelling up power prices, were discarded with a reference to the abundance of domestic gas resources.

Pete Olson, a prominent U.S. congressman and member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee has called to maximise LNG exports and natural gas production, dispersing concerns that this may lead to rising power prices by pointing at the abundance of domestic gas reserves in the United States.

Tougher emissions regulation by the U.S. Environmental Agency (EPA) and the subsequent shift from coal to cleaner burning gas-fired power generation will contribute to a 150% price hike for natural gas and a 7% rise in electricity prices, according to government data.

ISO New England, the regional transmission operator (RTO) in the northeastern U.S., estimates that summer peak demand will reach 26,660 MW this year. The region is heavily reliant on gas-fired power to meet demand and struggled with supply shortages when cold winter weather drove demand up earlier this year, but the ISO is confident it can meet summer demand.

Indonesia’s state-owned power utility PT Perusahaan Perseroan Listrik Negara (PLN) plans to speed up construction of 1,200 MW of new gas-fired power generating capacity to meet the country’s soaring power demand that is expected to increase at 7% per year.

The governments of China and Brazil are set to strengthen ties between their respective energy industries in a bid to boost gas imports to China and increase power generating capacity in both countries. China is interested in financing infrastructure construction project in Brazil, including gas-fired plants, and is eyeing LNG imports from Brazil’s large offshore gas fields.

TTF gas prices rise after Trump rejects Hormuz deal

Sept 28 – European gas prices at the Dutch TTF rose nearly 2.5% on Monday after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that disruptions to Middle East LNG shipments could persist into the winter. The bullishness at Europe’s benchmark gas trading hub is exacerbated by fear of gas shortages, given that gas storages are just under 70% full in key gas consuming markets such as Germany. The Dutch TTF front-month Oct26 contract was last seen trading at €74.05 per Megawatt-hour, while the Brent contract for November delivery was last seen changing hands at $108.08 per barrel.
