Nigeria’s natural gas production remains limited by a severe lack of infrastructure to monetize gas volumes that are currently being flared, latest EIA figures show. Though Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) has been privatised, a severe lack of gas supply deters investment in much-needed new power plant projects.

Electricity production from gas-fired plants in the UK in the third quarter of 2013 slumped to its lowest level in fifteen years, according to the latest government figures. Gas power plants accounted for just 27.2% of total capacity as high wholesale prices and uncertainty over regulation deterred operators.

The declaration of intent of German policy makers to develop a capacity mechanism by the end of this decade “suggests a lack of urgency,” Bank of America Merrill Lynch analysts said, suggesting this and a rise in renewables should keep downside pressure on German power prices.

The discovery of recoverable deepwater gas reserves in the Western Black Sea will help boost Romanian gas production and help stabilize supply for new gas-fired power plants in Europe from 2020 onwards. “driven by environmental policy decisions that are expected to result in a recovery of carbon prices, the loss of older, less efficient coal-fired […]

Driven by China’s hunger for energy, the global power boiler market is forecast to expand at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 6% from $17.35 billion in 2013 to $30.62 billion by 2020, Global Data analysts forecast.

Natural gas will become the dominant fuel for power generation in the U.S. by 2040, when it will account for 35% of production compared with 32% for coal, according to an early release of the Energy Information Administration’s 2014 Outlook report. Cheap domestic gas reserves, strong demand for flexibility of power supply, tighter environmental regulation […]

The rise in global coal demand is set to slowdown as China is looking to switch to cleaner-burning power sources, the U.S. turns to cheap shale gas, and as Europe’s temporary economic rebound is seen come to an end, the International Energy Agency (IEA) forecast.

The Mexican senate has approved reforms to open up the country’s energy sector to foreign investment and end the monopoly of Pemex, the state-owned power company. A lack of upside had deterred upstream investment, with shortages in gas supply causing power plant projects to stall despite plentiful reserves and strong demand for electricity.

Natural gas is forecast to overtake coal as the global dominant energy source by 2025, behind oil, with gas consumption forecast to surge 65% by 2040, ExxonMobil said in its annual energy outlook.

Power producers in the United States opt to build new gas-fired power plants or undertake coal-to-gas conversions rather than extending operations of nuclear reactors. Uncertainty over the continued operation of 38 out of a total of 100 reactors in the U.S. may threaten energy security, the American Physical Society warns.

TTF gas prices rise after Trump rejects Hormuz deal

Sept 28 – European gas prices at the Dutch TTF rose nearly 2.5% on Monday after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that disruptions to Middle East LNG shipments could persist into the winter. The bullishness at Europe’s benchmark gas trading hub is exacerbated by fear of gas shortages, given that gas storages are just under 70% full in key gas consuming markets such as Germany. The Dutch TTF front-month Oct26 contract was last seen trading at €74.05 per Megawatt-hour, while the Brent contract for November delivery was last seen changing hands at $108.08 per barrel.
