The Southeast has been singled out by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) as the region with the largest shift from coal- to gas-fired generation in the United States, spurred by lower gas prices compared with the high cost of shipping coal from producing regions.

Current proposals for UK capacity markets are likely to favour larger portfolio generators and existing, mothballed plants that are better placed to handle risks. “There seems to be general agreement that there will be critical demand for flexible gas-fired power from 2018-2019 onward but the proposed penalty regime could be prohibitive for some players, with […]

Wood Mackenzie analysts expect winter gas shortages to become an annual trend in China through to 2020 as surging gas demand for power generation and heating in cities cannot be met by domestic supply. Progress on shale gas production remains slow despite a domestic gas price reform, so reliance on importing LNG spot cargoes continues.

Setting up a capacity market in Germany would “very expensive” and seems unnecessary as the country is oversupplied – except for southern states – and should rather switch off older power plants instead of keeping them alive with financial support, said Claudia Kemfert, head of the energy, transport and environment department at the German Institute […]

Ed Davey, the UK secretary for energy and climate change, has urged country leaders at the UN climate conference in Warsaw to end funding for overseas coal-fired power plants as a step towards forging a global climate protection deal in 2015.

China is turning to use more natural gas for power generation to help promote energy saving and reduce air pollution. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has set out plans for gas supply capacity to exceed 260 Bcm, underpinning a 16.2% growth gas-fired capacity to reach 56 GW/year by 2015.

The South Korean government has reduced taxes on LNG to incentivise the use of natural gas for power generation, while simultaneously raising electricity rates to reign in peakload demand in order to alleviate system and the risk of power shortages in the upcoming winter season.

British Gas owner Centrica is gearing up to claim a £6 million refund from HM Revenue and Customs relating to the Peterborough gas-fired power station, arguing that business rates for the plant and several of its other loss-making gas power units were set too high.

The ten major power producers in Japan have consumed 16.3% less fuel oil in October than a year earlier as they stepped up the use of LNG and coal for power generation, data by the Federation of Electric Power Companies shows. The shutdown of Japan’s entire nuclear capacity and the shift to fossil fuels has […]

TTF gas prices rise after Trump rejects Hormuz deal

Sept 28 – European gas prices at the Dutch TTF rose nearly 2.5% on Monday after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that disruptions to Middle East LNG shipments could persist into the winter. The bullishness at Europe’s benchmark gas trading hub is exacerbated by fear of gas shortages, given that gas storages are just under 70% full in key gas consuming markets such as Germany. The Dutch TTF front-month Oct26 contract was last seen trading at €74.05 per Megawatt-hour, while the Brent contract for November delivery was last seen changing hands at $108.08 per barrel.
