Investment in shale gas plays in the US totalled $133.7 billion as part of 73 deals between 2008 and 2012, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). 21 joint ventures by foreign companies with US land holders and operators made up 20 percent or $26 billion of this investment.

Coal-to-gas switching in power generation has led to a plunge of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the United States to reach a record low in 2012, dropping to 5.3 billion metric tons of CO2 – the lowest level since 1994.

Low carbons prices of around €5/ton in the EU ETS and lower than anticipated funding through the EU’s NER300 program mean that there is currently no economic rationale for operators to invest in carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. To drive commercial CCS deployment, carbon allowance would need to trade at 40€/ton or more, the […]

The rising price spread between coal and natural gas is helping coal take back market share. Coal fired generation captured nearly everything lost by renewables and natural gas, surging 21percent higher in March of 2013 compared to March 2012, according to Genscape’s Generation Fuel Monitoring Service.

Nigeria, the largest market for diesel and gas generator sets in Africa, is forecast to see growth rates of 8.7 percent propelling up market volume from $450 million in 2011, to reach $950.7 million by 2020. “Sustained growth is driven by increasing electricity consumption, which has been growing at 8 percent per annum over recent […]

Growth in Mexico’s distributed power generation market is being driven by insufficient centralized electricity provision. The failure of the traditional model for the electricity market, which includes large infrastructure for power generation, transmission, and distribution, is laying the groundwork for a distributed power generation (DPG) model, Frost & Sullivan latest country analysis finds.

To satisfy rising power demand and avert severe energy shortfalls, the Iraqi government plans to expand generating capacity from about 9GW to 27GW by supporting construction of new gas-fired power stations and the conversion of old gas-fired plants into combined-cycle plants. Iraq could triple its generating capacity by 2015, Dr. Abd ‘Abd al-Satter, Director General […]

As Qatar’s electricity consumption has risen by a compound annual growth rate of 9.3 percent between 2001 and 2011, installed power generation capacity more than doubled from about 5300MW in 2009 to more than 10 500MW in 2011. The Gulf state produces power exclusively from natural gas and does not have any alternative projects underway.

The fast growth of distributed energy resources – ranging from fuel cells to micro turbines, photovoltaic systems and reciprocating engine – fundamentally alters ways of power generation, transmission and storage.

Profits of Tuas Power of Singapore, a unit of Huaneng Power International of China has dropped 18.77 percent for the financial year ending 31 December 2012 as a result of new power generation capacity coming to the market.

TTF gas prices rise after Trump rejects Hormuz deal

Sept 28 – European gas prices at the Dutch TTF rose nearly 2.5% on Monday after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that disruptions to Middle East LNG shipments could persist into the winter. The bullishness at Europe’s benchmark gas trading hub is exacerbated by fear of gas shortages, given that gas storages are just under 70% full in key gas consuming markets such as Germany. The Dutch TTF front-month Oct26 contract was last seen trading at €74.05 per Megawatt-hour, while the Brent contract for November delivery was last seen changing hands at $108.08 per barrel.

Singapore’s energy security hinges on LNG

Sept 14 – Singapore’s experience in the Middle East crisis highlights the country’s exposure to external energy supply shocks. Over 95% of Singapore’s electricity generation is fuelled by imported LNG, hence diversification is paramount for supply security, said Gan Siow Huang, Singapore’s minister of trade and industry. Singapore is hence developing a second LNG terminal with a view to increasing import capacity to 15 mtpa by 2030.
