A boom in new-built solar capacity Germany, with up to 3,000 MW of new-built capacity in a single month, proves detrimental for gas-fired power generation capacity. “Feed-in tariffs and ‘insanely over-funded’ renewable energy supply is the fundamental flaw in Germany’s energy transition, says Helge-Jürgen Beil, Vice President Asset Origination, Statkraft Markets GmbH.

For power producers to prefer gas over coal as a fuel for power generation the price of carbon emission allowances would have to rise to €40-50/ton, Thijs van Hittersum, Natural Gas Analyst, International Energy Agency said at a conference organised by Gas to Power Journal in Brussels today. Regulatory interventions such as the proposed backloading of […]

Exploitation of the UK’s significant shale gas resources is unlikely to result in low natural gas prices, as high costs and slow exploration rates are unlikely to offset the need to import gas for power generation.

Speculators are taking advantage of regulatory uncertainty and subsequent price volatility in the European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). “The carbon market is ‘broken’ in that it is driven by regulation, and not by fundamentals,” French investment bank Société Générale suggests.

Iran has announced the operational start-up of a gas-fired combined-cycle power plant, located in Yazd in central Iran, as part of government plans increase electricity exports to neighbouring countries.

Japan’s imports of liquefied natural gas have hit a monthly record of 8.23 million tonnes in January amid strong demand for gas-to-power generation to in replacement for closed nuclear plants.

Britain’s energy supply is in jeopardy as available power generation capacity is on “a roller-coaster ride heading downhill”, said Ofgem chief executive, Alistair Buchanan, in a stark warning that the combination of power plant closures, shrinking gas supply availability and rising energy demand has made reserves margins “uncomfortably tight”.

Withdrawing carbon emission allowances (EUAs) in the third phase of the European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) could help improve the profit margins of gas-fired power plants in Europe, suggests Torsten Amelung, Managing Director of Trading, Origination & Business Development at Statkraft Markets.

The LNG offtake of Japanese utilities rose 2.5 percent year-on-year in January to 5.32 million tonnes, with 5.16MT of the total used a fuel to generate power.

Keeping existing fossil capacity in the market will “prove to be difficult” and many European utilities “will abstain from investing” in new plants without capacity mechanisms as long as the current market situation with low electricity demand, low CO2 prices and relatively high gas prices persists, forecasts Jørgen Kildahl, member of the Board of Management […]

TTF gas prices rise after Trump rejects Hormuz deal

Sept 28 – European gas prices at the Dutch TTF rose nearly 2.5% on Monday after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that disruptions to Middle East LNG shipments could persist into the winter. The bullishness at Europe’s benchmark gas trading hub is exacerbated by fear of gas shortages, given that gas storages are just under 70% full in key gas consuming markets such as Germany. The Dutch TTF front-month Oct26 contract was last seen trading at €74.05 per Megawatt-hour, while the Brent contract for November delivery was last seen changing hands at $108.08 per barrel.

ProPetro to commit 230 MW to Targa

Sept 25 – ProPetro Holding, has committed to supply 230 MW of behind-the-meter power to support Targa’s natural gas processing infrastructure in the Permian Basin. The new units bring the total contracted capacity to 510 MW, with full deployment expected in early 2028.

Fitch ups INNIO’s credit rating

Sept 24 – Fitch Ratings has upgraded the credit rating of INNIO to BB from B+, with a stable outlook, following a recent upgrade by Moody’s. Analyst said these upgrades reflect INNIO’s strong operating performance and cash flow generation, supported by a growing installed base for power gen assets that helps underpin service revenues.

Singapore’s energy security hinges on LNG

Sept 14 – Singapore’s experience in the Middle East crisis highlights the country’s exposure to external energy supply shocks. Over 95% of Singapore’s electricity generation is fuelled by imported LNG, hence diversification is paramount for supply security, said Gan Siow Huang, Singapore’s minister of trade and industry. Singapore is hence developing a second LNG terminal with a view to increasing import capacity to 15 mtpa by 2030.
