Contrary to Asia’s slowing LNG demand growth, Taiwan is one of the few markets where demand keeps rising. Some 4.4 GW of gas-fired power gen capacity is scheduled to come online in the next few months, underpinning LNG demand, as Taipower is winding down output at its 950 MW Maanshan nuclear unit 1, which will […]

Upsides for gas prices have emerged in North Asia, where summer appears to be hotter than normal. While hurricane Beryl had no noticeable impact on US LNG exports and global gas prices, prolonged heatwaves in countries like Japan, China or South Korea “may break the well-balanced market,” warns Rystad Energy’s vice president Wei Xiong.

Henry Hub gas spot price is forecast to rise more than 36% this autumn, tilting the US power gen mix towards coal and renewables. Utilities will avert dispatching gas power plants as fuel prices are set to average $2.90 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) in the second half of this year, up from around […]

Volkswagen Group has decided to close the gas turbine business of its affiliate MAN Energy Solutions following the failed sale to a Chinese investor. VW does not view the business as lucrative and wanted to sell it to CSIC Longjiang Guanghan Gas Turbine (GHGT) but the German government blocked the deal due to GHGT’s ties […]

Elevated global LNG prices and sustained demand for cargos in Europe are expected to make US natural gas exports, including LNG and pipeline exports, rise 11% from last summer. Exports contribute the most to year-over-year summer demand growth and reduce available volumes for gas-burn though plentiful supply underpins a bearish sentiment at Henry Hub.

Egypt’s Sidi Kerir Company (Sidpec) is taking steps to buy large quantities of liquid ethane from the US to counter an acute shortage of natural gas that could herald the closure of more fertiliser plants. The Ministry of Petroleum had mandated fertiliser manufacturers to use 20% less natural gas as the fuel is currently prioritised […]

More than half of electricity generated in the EU came from renewables in the first half of 2024, while 74% originated from “green and low-carbon energy sources,” which include nuclear power, Eurelectric figures show. “The pace of change is impressive,” the association of Europe’s electricity industry said, noting “decarbonisation efforts of utilities are years ahead […]

Japan’s electricity supply balance has been shaken by two unexpected outages that reduced gas-burn and brought down Asian LNG prices before hitting $13/MMBtu. JERA’s Chiba gas power plant (360 MW) suffered a trip, with no restart date announced as yet, while Tokyo Gas’ Ohgishima gas power Unit 2 (407 MW) is offstream due to a […]

US District Judge James Cain in Lake Charles, Louisiana, has blocked President Biden’s temporary ban on approving applications to export LNG to non-FTA-countries, ruling the ban should “be stayed in its entirety, effective immediately.” The Trump-appointed judge sided with 16 states, including Texas, Louisiana and Florida, which argue the Department of Energy (DOE) overstepped its […]

Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) is critical for delivering net zero but investor interest hinges on state support. Announced government funding in Canada, the US, Denmark, the UK and Australia amounts to $80 billion, which is hoped to trigger $196 billion in private investment, pushing up carbon capture capacity to 440 mtpa and storage […]

TTF gas prices rise after Trump rejects Hormuz deal

Sept 28 – European gas prices at the Dutch TTF rose nearly 2.5% on Monday after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that disruptions to Middle East LNG shipments could persist into the winter. The bullishness at Europe’s benchmark gas trading hub is exacerbated by fear of gas shortages, given that gas storages are just under 70% full in key gas consuming markets such as Germany. The Dutch TTF front-month Oct26 contract was last seen trading at €74.05 per Megawatt-hour, while the Brent contract for November delivery was last seen changing hands at $108.08 per barrel.

ProPetro to commit 230 MW to Targa

Sept 25 – ProPetro Holding, has committed to supply 230 MW of behind-the-meter power to support Targa’s natural gas processing infrastructure in the Permian Basin. The new units bring the total contracted capacity to 510 MW, with full deployment expected in early 2028.

Fitch ups INNIO’s credit rating

Sept 24 – Fitch Ratings has upgraded the credit rating of INNIO to BB from B+, with a stable outlook, following a recent upgrade by Moody’s. Analyst said these upgrades reflect INNIO’s strong operating performance and cash flow generation, supported by a growing installed base for power gen assets that helps underpin service revenues.

Emerson builds automation service center in Qatar

Sept 23 – Emerson today announced plans to build its first certified flow calibration lab and an associated automation solution service center in Qatar’s Umm Alhoul Free Zone. The new 3,500-square-metre facility will expand Emerson’s local capabilities for customers across the Middle East and Africa.

The new substation is part of National Grid’s Brinsworth-to-Chesterfield and Chesterfield-to-High Marnham project, with the upgrade using SF₆-free technology to strengthen grid resilience across England and Wales in generations.

Singapore’s energy security hinges on LNG

Sept 14 – Singapore’s experience in the Middle East crisis highlights the country’s exposure to external energy supply shocks. Over 95% of Singapore’s electricity generation is fuelled by imported LNG, hence diversification is paramount for supply security, said Gan Siow Huang, Singapore’s minister of trade and industry. Singapore is hence developing a second LNG terminal with a view to increasing import capacity to 15 mtpa by 2030.

AI-linked power projects double in US

Aug 31 – The number of gas-fired power plant projects, linked to US data centres, has nearly doubled in the first half of 2026. According to Global Energy Monitor, 378 MW of gas capacity is currently under development in the US, one-third of total projected capacity worldwide, led by Texas with 122 MW.

Russian attack damages DTEK power plant

Aug 19 – A Russian air strike has damaged one of DTEK’s thermal power plant, forcing the Ukrainian operator to shut down one unit. DTEK’s thermal power fleet had an installed capacity of about 13.3 GW as of early 2022, spread across eight plants, though repeated attacks since then have destroyed much of that installed capacity, jeopardising regional electricity supply security.

EUAs hover around €80/t

July 24 – EU Carbon Emission Allowances are expected to continue their mean-reversion trading around €80/t for the rest of this month, as the Commissions adjustments leave supply-demand balances for carbon credits tight through 2035.
