Distributed energy sources, bundled into virtual power plants (VPPs), are becoming a low-cost alternative compared to centralised, utility-scale power plants, the Brattle Group finds. Over the past decade, U.S. utilities spent over $120 billion on 100 GW new power gen capacity and analysts say they could save $35 billion by 2033 by using VPPs for […]

Thermoelectric power plants in the United States use less and less water, with withdrawals for cooling having risen by just 0.3% in 2021 despite a 2.5% increase in installed power gen capacity. The marginal uptick in water withdrawals in that year was due to a rise in coal-fired generators which need more cooling water than […]

Petrobangla, Bangladesh’s state oil and gas company, has signed a contract with the Omani firm OQ Trading for an additional 0.25–1.5 mtpa of LNG deliveries. OQ Trading is already supplying 1 mtpa of LNG to Bangladesh with most of the volumes used for power generation while shipments under the new deal will start in 2025.

India’s largest gas distributor is understood to have issued a swap tender, offering 12 cargoes for loading from Sabine Pass terminal in the U.S. and seeking cargoes for delivery into its Dhamra regas terminal this year and in early 2024 to meet growing gas demand for power generation. The tender closes on June 22.

North Texas is under a weather watch, issued by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), amid concerns that the current heat wave will propel up electricity demand. This advance notification is posted three to five days before the extreme weather and can be followed by a voluntary conservation notice, urging Texans to safe energy.

As the energy transition accelerates, gas resource holders face a tough choice: continue developing new LNG export facilities or pivot to blue ammonia. For those seeking scale over the next 15 years, the prize is still LNG rather than blue ammonia, but for profitability and value, blue ammonia could prove more attractive, Wood Mackenzie finds.

TTF gas prices rise after Trump rejects Hormuz deal

Sept 28 – European gas prices at the Dutch TTF rose nearly 2.5% on Monday after US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that disruptions to Middle East LNG shipments could persist into the winter. The bullishness at Europe’s benchmark gas trading hub is exacerbated by fear of gas shortages, given that gas storages are just under 70% full in key gas consuming markets such as Germany. The Dutch TTF front-month Oct26 contract was last seen trading at €74.05 per Megawatt-hour, while the Brent contract for November delivery was last seen changing hands at $108.08 per barrel.

ProPetro to commit 230 MW to Targa

Sept 25 – ProPetro Holding, has committed to supply 230 MW of behind-the-meter power to support Targa’s natural gas processing infrastructure in the Permian Basin. The new units bring the total contracted capacity to 510 MW, with full deployment expected in early 2028.

Fitch ups INNIO’s credit rating

Sept 24 – Fitch Ratings has upgraded the credit rating of INNIO to BB from B+, with a stable outlook, following a recent upgrade by Moody’s. Analyst said these upgrades reflect INNIO’s strong operating performance and cash flow generation, supported by a growing installed base for power gen assets that helps underpin service revenues.

Singapore’s energy security hinges on LNG

Sept 14 – Singapore’s experience in the Middle East crisis highlights the country’s exposure to external energy supply shocks. Over 95% of Singapore’s electricity generation is fuelled by imported LNG, hence diversification is paramount for supply security, said Gan Siow Huang, Singapore’s minister of trade and industry. Singapore is hence developing a second LNG terminal with a view to increasing import capacity to 15 mtpa by 2030.
